And you think you had problems with writing a love scene…

Check out the winner of the Literary Review’s Bad Sex in Fiction award as reported by the Guardian. I’ve read worse personally. For a taste of the rest of the nominees, look here.

Apparently, according to this blog, the history of the award was to remind authors that sex has no place in literary fiction. I beg to differ – there are a number of literary novels that could do with a good bonk scene…

But I do agree with one thing – love scenes are very, very hard to write. Even worse when the children are hanging off your arm and the husband is looking over your shoulder wondering what you’re doing…

  1. Totally agree. Am currently reading Madame Bovary and if ever there was a woman in need of a good s**g…!

And I love the apologia – am going to a party with barristers next week – am sure they’ll come in handy if I dare admit what I do in my spare time 😉

  2. Ha ha, Lucy! I never tackled Madam Bovary – maybe I should.

The apologia is great isn’t it? For all those times when people ask you, ‘So, are you going to write anything else?’. Which people do – as if writing romance isn’t enough somehow…

  3. Personally am finding Mme Bovary a bit of a drag, heavy on description, light on action – wouldn’t bother if I were you (may English Lit graduates smote me from on high)
