Worst Date Ever And Other Horror Stories

Trying to hook up romance with horror and Halloween is a weird one – especially since I don’t write pararnormal or suspense. But I do write contemporary romance and since love can be kind of horrible.. I thought I’d ask if you guys had any hideous dating horror stories you want to share?

Sadly, mine isn’t particularly horrible, only moderately embarrassing.ย  At least it was when I was eighteen!

First date with my future husband and we went back to his place after the movie. He made coffee and we stayed up talking. Yes, talking!! I swear it’s true. And then at some point his mother comes into the kitchen (he was still living at home) and asks if I’m Jackie and that my mother was on the phone. It was 4am! And my mother had somehow found out his phone number and rung in the middle of the night because I hadn’t come home yet and she was worried.

I don’t know what was more embarassing: the fact that my mother was checking up on me and waking his parents up in the middle of the night with a phone call, or the fact that all we were doing was talking! ๐Ÿ™‚

Anyone got any other dating horror stories to share?ย  I’m giving away a $10 giftcard to one lucky commenter and a free copy of either Talking Dirty with the CEO or Talking Dirty with the Player.

  1. Hilarious! On my first date with my first boyfriend he took me to a really expensive restaurant. Having a wonderful time then I saw a couple at another table getting all romantic. I started shrinking under our table. When my boyfriend asked me what was wrong I told him I’d just seen by best friend’s dad at the next table. When my boyfriend asked me what the problem was and whether I’d like to say hello, I told him no, because my best friend’s dad wasn’t with my best friend’s mother. Awkward. Interesting talking point for a first date, and the evening though.

  2. Mine was a date that I didn’t figure out was a date until later.

I had a girlfriend, E., who had two mutual guy friends that she introduced me to. We were all at college/university living on campus and would run into each other quite a bit and grab a coffee or just hang out for a while. They were nice enough guys, but I never had any interest in them and thought it was the same all around.

So my friend E. called me one night and said “X and Y (I can’t even remember their names, isn’t that awful?) want to go see a movie, would you like to come along?” I said sure. The movie was Ninth Gate and it was a terrible, terrible movie. Even Johnny Depp couldn’t save that movie and that is saying something.

E sat next to X. Y and I sat and made fun of the movie mercilessly and we all went home and that was it. I didn’t see much of X and Y for a while and didn’t even think about it until E. (I know, this is starting to sound like an algebra problem) admitted to me a little later “X and I dated for a while, but it just didn’t work out.”

“Like when we all went to the movies?” “Yeah.” I had been set up on stealth double date! I didn’t think much about it although, until . . .

I ran into Y. not too long after that and told him I was going abroad for a year and it threw him. He didn’t say anything specific, but you could read his feelings on his face. I had no clue he was even interested and it was pretty awkward for both of us. I felt guilty for feeling oblivious and I think he felt very embarrassed to realize his feelings were out there and not returned.

Poor Y. He was a really nice person, but I think he was a little too shy for the dating scene or at least to date me. I need things spelled out for me ๐Ÿ˜‰ I’m sure he’s moved on to a wonderful life, but I do think about him every time I see something about the Ninth Gate. ๐Ÿ˜‰

    1. Oh, poor guy! And poor you being on a stealth double date! I think the movie should have been a good indication to him about how things were going to go – not well. ๐Ÿ™‚

  3. Hah, Jackie, at least you guys didn’t get busted by his mother while doing anything explicit:) That would have been embarrassing for sure. For me, the most awkward dating moment was sort of lame but awkward nonetheless. A fella took me ice skating (give me a break, we were in college) and who did I run into while I was there? The other guy I had just started dating who was there with his family. He was sweet enough when he saw me but never did call me back. Whoops.

Anyway, I’m new to this whole blog thing and just thought I’d say hello. Looking to get hooked up with fellow female romance writers. I’m finally throwing down the gauntlet to finish the manuscript I started a while back and am hoping to have it done in the next month or two.

    Toodles,
    Portia

    1. Hey Portia! Yeah, that’s true. But oh no, on your experience! That’s very lame! Poor you. And congrats on the writing! Definitely get it done and finish it, then send that baby out. ๐Ÿ™‚

  4. I never really dated much. Kinda bad to say but my whole family is into dirt track racing and that is how I met my hubby. We just always went to the track and all my family is usually around so really wouldnt say we dated a whole lot as far as going out to different places just never have been into them much.

    1. Hi Pam, but it’s great you met someone as into it as you are. That’s the important bit… ๐Ÿ™‚

  5. It was second time I was meeting up with this guy. We decided to meet at the bar I would go to with friends after work. I got there first and with talking with a some friends. When the guy got there we went to a table with few friends! When I tried to introduce him to few of the friends he refused to say hello and walk across to the end of the bar. (Side note: I did explain there would other friend with us). One friend asked if going to follow him. I didn’t feel I did anything wrong. I told him he came to see me. He was not happy and decided to leave. That was the last date!

    1. Hi sharon, bah, sounds like you were better off without him if he couldn’t handle your friends. And no, I didn’t you did anything wrong either!

  6. Nope, no dating horror stores to share… ๐Ÿ˜€ Thanks for the giveaway though. ๐Ÿ™‚

  7. It was the first date with my current boyfriend, about 3.5 years ago. Driving to the restaurant I starting freaking out because there was a spider on me. After sitting at the hibachi grill (filled with other people eating with us) for a few minutes I freaked out again. This time because the spider was crawling out from between my boobs! He made the night better by taking us for ice cream after dinner.

    1. Jessica, OMG! That would freak me out too! Gah! Well done him for buying you icecream though. ๐Ÿ™‚

  8. I have to say I have an ex who when we first started going together he came over for a date and went and had to pick up a friend in trouble he ended up doing body shots off of her was embarrassing then a few days later tried trading me in to his ex-wifes new husband wanted to do a partner swap was seriously a bad day both times

  9. No horror stories, but on my very first date, I was so nervous that I probably said a total of 20 words. So I might be a ‘horror’ story on his side ๐Ÿ˜‰
