So You Think You Can Wait Part 2

I’m still in waiting room hell. Have heard nothing re SYTYCW this week. I’m almost wishing I’d got one of the Rs they sent out last week because then at least I’d know. But the worst part is that after waiting another week after everyone else, I STILL could get an R. Groan. Poor eds, they had flu and then a snow day, and no doubt are up to their eyeballs in lots of other stuff, but the timing sure does suck. At least I’m not the only one though. There are a bunch of us who haven’t heard so that’s something. Means I won’t be getting too paranoid about whether they even received my entry!

Anyway, now I have to wait until NZ Tuesday before I find out anything. I know, drama queen right? Well, I’m afraid that’s me. Drama queen extraordinaire. And when you know you’re going to hear about a sub ‘any day’ you just can’t just forget about it. At least, I can’t. It has made writing this week very difficult (waking up at 5am every day to check your email gets a little tiring – and no, I didn’t purposefully wake up at that time!). I’ve got ‘waiting paralysis’ basically. Plenty of stuff I should be getting on with but I keep coming up against the ‘will they even want the rest of this?’ barrier. Same with all my new ideas, especially since – when you’re targeting Riva – you have no idea whether what they’re looking for…

Well, that’s my vent of the month. Anyone got any tips as to good distraction techniques?

  1. Oh Jackie – it must be horrid for you. You’ve been in my thoughts this week. I know what it’s like to expect a reply and not get one but I’m the world’s most impatient person, so I have no advice on how to make the waiting easier.

Am still keeping everything crossed for you.

  2. Jackie, sweetie,

I’d recommend shopping if I thought it would help but it’s never helped me any and besides, I loathe shopping. I’d recommend picking up a good book but if, like me, really excellent writing makes you doubt your own efforts, don’t bother with that option either. I’d recommend getting drunk but having young children dependant on you kinda knocks that one on the head. How about some writing? Oh, yes, you can’t channel concentration through all of that frustration taking over your brain so another suggestion bites the dust.

But how about this? Pick up a really bad book. Yes, there are some of those out there, and I’m not trying to sound negative but some books do suck. Read one, if you can find one, and marvel at how fabulously talented you are in comparison. I’m serious, this does work and will go a long way to making you feel better as well as passing some time before next Tuesday.

If all else fails, treat Paul to a weekend long early birthday present…

    Hugs,
    Aideen.

  3. I’m glad I haven’t got anything subbed at the moment cos I NEED my sleep right now and I’m a middle of the night email checker when subs are concerned. But I do log on EVERY morning hoping YOU’VE heard good news πŸ™‚

  4. I am awful at waiting. I’m very impatient.

See a movie. A really good movie makes you forget everything for a little while. We saw Red last weekend; it is totally awesome.

Read a good book. Read something outside of the romance genre. Read a nonfiction book even. Brian Greene has a new book out. I’m reading an older title by Malcolm Gladwell now that makes me have to set the timer so I don’t forget to collect the kid.

Play with your kids. Hands down the best distraction there is.

    {{hugs}}

  5. Um, have a very painful accident? It worked for me, definitely distracted me and even made me forget to check my email the very day I heard back on my partial after a six month wait!

Although the film idea sounds much nicer, I have to say πŸ˜‰

  6. Suzanne – it has been horrid. And no doubt will continue to be so. Thanks for the finger crossing!

Hey, Scarlet! Thanks for the faith. πŸ™‚

Aideen! Woohoo! Thanks for dropping by m’dear. Love your suggestion. The wine one was tried last night to great effect but this morning isn’t so hot. πŸ˜‰ But the book thing IS fab. Actually the thing that works for me is reading something completely different. So I’m reading SF this morning. SF without a skerrick of romance. πŸ™‚

Rach – I hope one day when you log on I DO!

Julia – Great minds think alike. Already doing the book thing so that’s good. Yeah, doing stuff with the kids IS awesome. Might go and do some of that.

Lorraine – at this rate a painful accident in return for a full request might work for me. πŸ˜‰

Nas – Yes, it is isn’t it? Ah, I do like all the lovely ladies who come and comment here.

  7. I’ll second (or third) the movie suggestion. Something that really grabs you and sucks you in and lets you get lost in another world for a few hours. I’m really enjoying Bollywood movies at the moment. They’re brilliant – beautiful costumes, music, dancing, love stories without gratuitous sex (great for studying sexual tension though) and they leave you with that nice HEA feeling. Or a bit of Jane Austen. She’s always on my must see list (must see over and over and over list that is). Or cook. I loooooove cooking so it’s very therapeutic for me. Oh and knitting. Knitting is good too. *reads back over comment* Boring sod aren’t I? But I’m so feeling for you my dear and I hope your waiting will soon be replaced with celebrating!

  8. Elissa – fab suggestions and no, not boring! Though I hate cooking so maybe not that one and I can’t knit so I don’t know that I could do that either. All the rest though…very useful. Go Bollywood eh?

  9. I was so sure that I would have missed your big announcement πŸ™ Perhaps they were waiting for me to get my power back before they gave you the news? πŸ˜‰ That’s kind of them don’t you think? πŸ˜›

  10. Lacey – that must be it. Is your power on now? I guess it must be since you’re posting here. πŸ™‚ I shall inform Toronto that they can post my feedback now!

  11. Jackie – I too have been checking in reguarly hoping you would have had news!! Fingers crossed it will be tomorrow and that this will prove ‘good things come to those who wait’

  12. Natalie – a holiday would be fab! But sadly hubby is back at work and I am on kid duty. πŸ™ Did have a one day internet holiday but not sure that counts.

Caroline – yeah, I reckon eh? And actually it’s been about 3 years. Groan. πŸ™‚

Nina – Oh, I hope you’re right and it’s not a case of ‘your entry was lost in the mail’ coming to those who wait. πŸ™‚

  13. Ack, I don’t know how you’re managing, it’s a nightmare isn’t it? Every evening I’m there on twitter looking through the stream to see if you’ve heard. Really hoping tomorrow will be the day.

Let’s hope Lacey’s power back on is the charm πŸ™‚

  14. Joanne – to be honest, I’m not managing all that well. I’d really prefer it if this was like all the other subs and I’d find out ‘whenever’. I’m hoping tomorrow (my Tuesday) will be the day but to be honest, I’m not holding out hope!

  15. Awww bless you xxx

On eharl subcare Donna Alward says she is going to Toronto. Maybe you should email her and ask her to grab an ed while she’s there and get an answer out of her? πŸ˜‰

  16. Sending you lots of HUGS!! I can recall all too well the angst of waiting and have no secret tricks up my sleeve for coping.

Got my fingers crossed for good news.

  17. Joanne – that’s a good idea. Probably quicker to do that than wait for an email at this rate!

Cat – thanks! This news – whatever it is – is sure slow in coming. πŸ™

  18. Jackie, I would be going NUTS if I was the one waiting. I didn’t enter and I’m constantly checking eharlequin to see if there’s any news. I know things happen like flu and snow (I’m Canadian) but I’m surprised that some kind of notice about the delay wasn’t posted on Friday.

Hmm, what to do to take your mind of it? Lots of chocolate? A day out, away from the computer doing something fun with friends or the kids?

  19. Anne – hey, yeah, going nuts is right! Maisey tweeted them today and they said they’ll be sending out the last responses this week so at least I know I’ll get something this week. At least that’s the plan. Hopefully.
Anyway, had a day off the PC on Sunday which was great and am trying to pitifully get back into writing. Which isn’t working. My poor old mojo has gone….:-(
